Cristina Amoretti, Joint Attention and Triangulation
According to Davidson triangulation plus language are necessary and sufficient for thought. I shall demonstrate that such an account does not provide any support for the thesis that thought is necessarily social, and that it is possible to preserve the non-reductive character of thought without giving up any attempt to explain the passage from the pre-cognitive to the full-blown thought. I propose to consider a third kind of triangulation, i.e. joint attention, which differs from basic triangulation because it is cognitive and intentional, and from the full-fledged one because it is pre-linguistic and it does not admit second-order mental states. Then, I shall explain how this account guarantees the social character of thought and is neither circular nor reductive.
