Daniela Tagliafico, A Relativist Account of Simulation. (Or How Becoming Someone Else Without Contradiction)
Gordon’s simulation theory of mindreading (1986) has never been very popular between philosophers and cognitive scientists because of the difficulties at explaining one of its central features: the personal transformation that the simulator would be required to accomplish in order to assume the target’s point of view. This transformation (me becoming someone else) seems to imply, in fact, a metaphysical impossibility. I will offer a reinterpretation of Gordon’s personal transformation that makes appeal to the version of moderate relativism proposed by Recanati (2007). Transforming oneself in someone else, I will argue, implies the capacity to reproduce incomplete thoughts (thoughts lacking the subject of the thought itself) and to relativize them to the target’s rather than the simulator’s situation.
