Fine Summerschool

Parmi les philosophes contemporains, Kit Fine occupe une place singulière. Il est difficile de penser à quelqu'un d'autre qui combine de la même manière une approche originale et très influentielle aux problèmes de la philosophie contemporaine avec un intérêt, une considération détaillée et une sensibilité subtile pour les problèmes classiques de la philosophie. Kit Fine est un exemplaire fascinant d'un philosophe qui développe et articule ses idées en les exposant, ce qui le rend particulièrement attractif en tant qu'enseignant principale d'une école d'été déstinée aux doctorants romands en philosophie.

L'école d'été aura lieu du soir du 6 juin au midi du 14 juin 2023, à l'Aarbergerhus à Ligerz/Gléresse, , entre Neuchâtel et Bienne, au milieu des vignes.

Le séminaire résidentiel commencera avec deux journées de préparation, introduisant l'oeuvre de Kit Fine aux participants. Pendant ces journées préparatifs, une considération particulière sera donnée aux aspects méthodologiques de la philosophie Finéenne. Il est attendu des participants de s'avoir familiarisé en avance avec l'oeuvre publié de Fine.

Nous passerons ensuite 5 journées et demi à discuter l'oeuvre de Fine, commençant lar la métamétaphysique et passant de la persistence, de la méréologie, des objets arbitraires à l'essence, grounding, la sémantique des vérifacteurs, aux problèmes des relations et du vague.  

L'école doctorale est déstinée principalement aux doctorants romands, mais est ouverte à d'autres personnes. Priorité sera donnée à ceux qui s'engagent à participer à l'entière summerschool.

Among contemporary philosophers, Kit Fine occupies a singular place. It is difficult to think of anyone else who combines in the same way an original and highly influential approach to the problems of contemporary philosophy with an interest in, a detailed consideration of, and a subtle sensitivity to the classical problems of philosophy. Kit Fine is a fascinating example of a philosopher who develops and articulates his ideas by expounding them, which makes him particularly attractive as the principal teacher of a summer school for French-speaking doctoral students in philosophy.

The summer school will take place from the evening of June 6 to the afternoon of June 14, 2023, at the Aarbergerhus in Ligerz/Gléresse, between Neuchâtel and Bienne, in the middle of the vineyards.

The residential seminar will start with two days of preparation, introducing the work of Kit Fine to the participants. During these preparatory days, special consideration will be given to methodological aspects of Fine's philosophy. Participants are expected to have familiarised themselves with Fine's published work in advance.

We will then spend five and a half days discussing Fine's work, starting with metametaphysics and moving on from persistence, mereology, arbitrary objects to essence, grounding, the semantics of verifiers, to problems of relations and vagueness.

The graduate school is intended primarily for doctoral students from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, but is open to others. Priority will be given to those who commit to participate in the entire summerschool.

This is not primarily a teaching event, but an occasion to make philosophical progress through discussion of ongoing and future work and perhaps yet still "half-baked" ideas. Participants are asked to participate actively and help shape the program, with the aim of making this as philosophically productive as possible.

Il ne s'agit pas en premier lieu d'un événement pédagogique, mais d'une occasion de progresser sur le plan philosophique en discutant des travaux en cours et à venir, ainsi que d'idées peut-être encore "à moitié cuites". Les participants sont invités à participer activement et à contribuer à l'élaboration du programme, dans le but de rendre cet événement aussi productif que possible sur le plan philosophique.

Les coûts du logement (dans des chambres partagés) et des repas sont offerts à tous les participants. Les participants s'engagent à participer de manière active dans la totalité du programme et de contribuer à la documentation de l'école d'été sur le portail www.philosophie.ch.

Malheureusement, nous ne sommes pas en mesure de rembourser des frais de voyage.

Participants will have their accommodation (in simple shared rooms) and their food covered. They commit to an active participation in the whole programme of the summer-school and to contribute to its documentation on the philosophy portal www.philosophie.ch.

Unfortunately, we cannot contribute towards travel costs or any other expenses.

To enliven the discussion, all participants are asked to think about an objection they find defensible (if not right) about a thesis advocated (or, at least, considered) in published work by Kit Fine. The objection should be put on a one-page handout and should not take more than 5 minutes to present, Please also indicate for which program slot its discussion would be suitable. Ideally, the handout takes the following form:

• formulation of the thesis, with complete reference to at least one published work of Kit Fine
• statement of the objection
• principal argument(s) in favour of the objection
• some possible replies to the objection
