The Philosophers' Workbench

The 'workbench' project, the first phase of which was generously funded by swissuniversities for the years 2022 and 2023, realised synergies between the journal Dialectica's "flipping" to full (aka Platinum, Diamond) Open Access, and the portal's becoming an Open Access publishing platform. It has established Philosophie.ch as an Open Access publishing house, which makes its ressources freely available in the form of the Open Access toolkit. 

In continuation of the flipping of Dialectica, the association is working on the following projects: 

• the "fishpond", an editorial management system for triple-blind refereeing; 
• the "md workflow", a set of tools for the professional copy-editing of humanties manuscripts and the production of beautiful pdf and html articles, journal issues and edited collections;
• the "Open Manual of Style", a manual for external copy-editors of markdown documents;
• the "Open Access toolkit", a documentation and explanation of the Dialectica flipping process, that should help other humanities journals to efficiently and successfully make the transition to real, full (aka Platinum, Diamond) Open Access.

In addition to the journal, Philosophie.ch also publishes the "Dialectica library", a book series, and the "Dialectica bibliography", a more-or-less complete bibliography of the entire philosophical literature. 

Phase 2 of the workbench project should tie these different threads together into an academic portal which can be used to do philosophical work: reading and annotating books and articles, sketching one’s own ideas, formulating, circulating, discussing drafts, comparing positions, making references and evaluating the work of others.

Ziel des Projekts war das «Flipping» von Dialectica, einer der 10 führenden philosophischen Fachzeitschriften und einer der zwei einzigen auf dem europäischen Kontinent beheimateten. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schweizer Philosophieportal Philosophie.ch gelang die Ausarbeitung eines neuen Produktionsprozesses für .pdf- und .html-Versionen der Artikel und des «fishpond», einer unkomplizierten und einzigartigen Plattform für «triple-blind refereeing».

Die wesentlichen Ziele wurden erreicht, die Zeitschrift ist nun frei erhältlich. Noch zu machen ist die Benachrichtigung der Community, die zu einem sprunghaften Anstieg der Anzahl eingereichter Artikel führen wird. Um diesen Ansturm bewältigen zu können, müssen wir erst zusätzliche Mitglieder (Schweizer Postdocs oder Professoren der Philosophie) gewinnen, wozu wir momentan bedeutende Anstrengungen unternehmen. Die Steigerung der Attraktivität dieser (unbezahlten) Arbeit, die durch den «fishpond» erzielt wurde, wird uns dabei helfen.
