Swiss Philosophy Newsletter

We are pleased to send you the October newsletter. The theme of this newsletter is "Why study philosophy".

Anyone who studies philosophy has certainly heard phrases like "but what kind of job will you do after your studies?" and received some puzzled looks. Even though philosophical questions interest many, people shy away from pursuing a degree in philosophy. We try to address this uncertainty and have asked some philosophers what are the good reasons for studying philosophy. Furthermore, we interviewed people who now work in various different fields. Has the study of philosophy been of any use to them, or was that never the question?

Anyone who is not sure where he or she should study or what pursuing a degree actually looks like should read the testimonials of philosophy students. Maybe you want to go abroad? It is also worth consulting our pages on bachelor's and master's degree programs. There you will find concrete information about philosophy majors and minors at all universities in Switzerland.

We would also like to invite all students to send us their own report about their student experience. Experiences of PhD students, post-docs and professors are also a valuable addition to our portal.

Regardless of whether the following articles, experiences and information pages remove doubts or reinforce them, we hope that some light has been shed on the matter.

Good Reasons for studying Philosophy
Is studying philosophy a penniless activity? Why should one study philosophy at all? We asked some philosophers.

Why Study Philosophy?
Philosophy deals with the profound questions of our lives: What is true? What can we know? As interesting as such questions seem to many people, some still shy away from studying philosophy. The reason is widespread - and quite justified: What can one actually do after studying philosophy? What profession can one take up?
GAP essay contest 2023

Each year, undergraduate and graduate philosophy students are invited to submit an essay answering to a specific question to participate in the contest and win up to 750 € (1st place). This year's question is:

What, if anything, will AI never be capable of ?

How I Discovered Philosophy
My discovery of philosophy was not a direct and formal encounter but rather a gradual intellectual journey shaped by my innate curiosity about profound questions, exposure to diverse influences, and a deep sense of moral concern.

Navigating a Postgraduate Degree Abroad
Many of us find ourselves at points in life when we feel a tad stifled, perhaps even a bit disoriented or a touch lost. As I neared the culmination of my undergraduate journey at the University of Bern in Switzerland, I, too, began sensing a need for a change. Then, I decided to pursue a postgraduate degree in the UK.

Sex-Segregation-Free Sports for All
Historically, sports have been very gendered. A woman, of course, had to be weak and could only be allowed to have physical activities that would not be tagged as ‘sports’ such as dancing. Men, however, have always been welcome to compete in sports, sometimes completely naked like in the Olympic games. The gendered upbringing and performance has repercussions in all parts of life, including sports too.

How I escaped from the Taliban
This article is part of the refugee project
Today, Afghan women are deprived of all their basic rights under the Taliban rule. Currently, no Afghan girls can study or be enrolled in universities. In the past 20 years, Afghan women continuously strived to be involved in the society and to make a difference. They became ministers, parliament members, journalists, teachers, and more. Unfortunately, now, the Taliban increasingly erase women from the public scene.

Concours: The Soundtrack of My Mind

Philosophie.ch is hosted an essay competition  in order to explore connections and interrelations between philosophy and music. Description:

What is the philosophy behind your song?

Have you ever thought about why you like your favorite song so much? Maybe it was running in the background at a beautiful moment in your life. Perhaps the text describes a situation that you have already experienced, so precisely that you finally felt understood.  Do you maybe even hear your favorite philosopher in the verses?
